Township, developed by Playrix, is a hybrid city-building and farming simulation game that first launched on mobile devices in 2011. It's available as a free download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and its mobile version has amassed over 100 million downloads on Google Play alone. While it's primarily a pure mobile game, you can also play it on PC via Steam, and it offers cross-progression if you sync through Facebook. The core loop is free to download and play, but like most free-to-play games on the app store, it relies heavily on in-app purchases. These range from small coin packs for a few dollars to larger bundles that can cost upwards of $99.99. There are also optional in-app ads you can watch for bonuses, but they aren't intrusive. I first downloaded it a few years back looking for a casual time-waster on my android, and I was surprised how deep it actually gets.

Gameplay is split between farming crops, raising animals, and building a bustling town from scratch. You start with a tiny patch of land and a few coin, and then you're off planting wheat, corn, and sugarcane to fulfill orders at the harbor, the plane, and the train. The best part for me is the constant sense of progression. Every time you level up, you unlock new factories, decorations, or community buildings. It scratches that itch of seeing a town grow organically. My favorite part, though, has to be the cooperative element with the Co-op. Joining a group of active players on Google Play makes a huge difference. You can ask for help with your train orders, trade goods, and compete in the Regatta, a weekly co-op competition where you solve tasks to earn chests. Without a decent co-op, the game can feel like a lonely grind, but with one, it's a shared experience.

If you've played similar city-building or farming sims, Township stands out for its sheer variety. You've got games like Hay Day that focus purely on farming and trading, or SimCity BuildIt which is just about city management. Township combines both, so you're never just planting crops or just building houses. You have to manage your factories, your animal pastures, your town's population, and even your mine for ore and gems. It's a more complete package. I've tried Farmville 3 and found it a bit too shallow in comparison, the world felt smaller. Township feels like a full-fledged simulation more than just a mobile cash grab. If you're browsing Google Play for a deep, long-term time-sink that works great on android, this is easily one of the best in its genre. Just be prepared to either spend some money or be patient with timers.

features

  • Hybrid Gameplay 🏘️ Unlike pure farming sims like Hay Day, Township lets you build a full city with factories, community buildings, and decorations alongside your farm. You're managing a whole economy, not just a field.
  • Regatta Competitions ⛵ This is a standout feature. Your co-op works together on a series of tasks each week to climb a leaderboard. It's the main reason I keep coming back — it adds real multiplayer strategy beyond just trading goods.
  • Expeditions & Mine 🗺️ You can send your helicopter to islands and mine for gems and ore. Mining unlocks the Mine of Time mini-game, which is a fun break from crop rotations. Games like Farmville 3 just don't have this depth of side content.

pros

  • Visual Polish 🌟 The art style is really clean and vibrant. Buildings have charming animations (kids playing, cars driving), and everything feels alive. SimCity BuildIt looks sharper but lacks the same warmth.
  • Deep Progression 📈 There's always a new factory, a new crop, or a new community building to unlock. I've been playing for two years and I'm still unlocking stuff. Hay Day feels more static after the early levels, but Township keeps the curve interesting.
  • Free-to-Play Friendly 💰 While the shop can be pricey, you can absolutely enjoy the entire game without spending a dime. You just have to be smart with your coins and gems. The game gives you plenty of free chests and events to earn resources.

cons

  • Slow Mid-Game Pace ⏳ After the initial rush, the game slows down dramatically. Waiting hours for production or for your trains to return can be frustrating. SimCity BuildIt offers faster feedback loops, so Township can feel like a waiting simulator without boosters.
  • Heavy Pay-to-Win Shop 💸 For competitive Regatta players, spending money gives a huge advantage. Buying extra boxes or speed-ups lets you outpace free players easily. In Hay Day, the pay advantage is more subtle, but here it's very front-loaded.
  • Inventory Limits 📦 Your barn storage is always too small. You'll constantly be flooded with crops and goods, and upgrading the barn takes forever. This creates a constant resource management headache that some other sims handle more gracefully with unlimited slots.
