Zalo is a messaging and social networking app from Vietnam, developed by Zalo Group. It's essentially a hybrid between a chat app like WhatsApp and a social platform like Facebook, but tailored specifically for Vietnamese users. People mainly use it for instant messaging, voice and video calls, sharing photos and updates, and even making payments or ordering food through built-in mini-apps. If you live in Vietnam or have friends or family there, downloading Zalo feels almost unavoidable because it's how everyone keeps in touch. After installing it from Google Play or the App Store—it's free and has over 100 million installs on Android alone—you're asked to register with a phone number. The first impression is clean and functional, with a green and white interface that feels familiar if you've used other messaging apps. There are no distracting ads when you first open it, which is nice, though you might notice some in-app purchase options for stickers or extra features later on.
Once you start using Zalo, the hands-on experience is pretty straightforward. After registration, you're prompted to sync your phone contacts, and the app immediately shows you which friends are already on Zalo. The main screen has tabs for Chats, Contacts, Timeline, and More. Sending a text or photo is as simple as tapping a conversation and typing. What stands out is how smoothly it handles voice and video calls—even on slower networks, the quality holds up better than I expected. One small thing I noticed is that the Timeline tab (like a news feed) shows updates from friends, but the algorithm doesn't push random posts, so you only see what people you actually know share. A tip: if you use ZaloPay for transfers or bills, you can access it from the More tab without jumping to another app. The onboarding is quick—no tutorials needed—and within five minutes, you're already chatting. It felt intuitive, but I did get confused once trying to find the “Secret Chat” feature, which is hidden under a contact's menu instead of being obvious from the chat list.
After using Zalo for a few weeks, I'd say it's perfect for anyone living in or connected to Vietnam, especially older relatives who aren't tech-savvy but can manage basic messaging. If you're outside Vietnam and don't have local contacts, you won't find much reason to keep it installed—WhatsApp or Telegram would serve you better since they're more global. What sets Zalo apart isn't one killer feature but how deeply it's woven into daily life here: ordering coffee, paying a friend back, or reading local news all happen inside one app. That convenience makes me keep it installed, even though I occasionally miss the cleaner, ad-free vibe of Signal. Compared to Messenger, Zalo feels less cluttered and more respectful of privacy, but it's not as polished as Telegram for group chats. I'd probably uninstall it if I moved away, but for now, it's too useful to delete.
features
- 🤖 Voice transcription for messages – Unlike WhatsApp, which only offers voice notes as audio, Zalo automatically transcribes your voice messages into text. This is great when you can't play audio in a quiet place. The accuracy is decent for Vietnamese, though less reliable for English.
- 🏦 ZaloPay integration – Unlike Telegram or Messenger, Zalo has a full payment system built right into the chat interface. You can send money, pay bills, or scan QR codes without ever leaving a conversation. It's much more seamless than WhatsApp's limited payment support in some regions.
- 👻 Secret Chat with self-destruct – Similar to Telegram's Secret Chat, Zalo offers disappearing messages and screenshot prevention. But Zalo takes it further by locking chats behind a separate PIN or fingerprint, which feels more secure than WhatsApp's ephemeral messages.
- 📱 Timeline as a local social feed – Unlike WeChat's Moments or Facebook's News Feed, Zalo's Timeline shows only updates from your phone contacts—no random ads or recommended posts. It's a more private, less noisy social experience than what you get on Messenger or Line.
pros
- ✅ Localized for Vietnamese users – Zalo understands local needs better than global apps like WhatsApp. For example, it supports Vietnamese diacritics perfectly, offers popular local stickers, and even has a feature to send “lì xì” (lucky money) during Tet. You won't find that on Telegram or Signal.
- ✅ All-in-one without bloat – Unlike WeChat, which feels overwhelming, Zalo bundles messaging, social feed, payments, and news into a single app but keeps the interface clean. You get utility without the clutter that pushes people away from Facebook Messenger.
- ✅ Reliable call quality on weak networks – Compared to Skype or FaceTime, Zalo's voice and video calls handle low bandwidth impressively well. In Vietnam's rural areas, it often works when other apps lag or drop calls entirely.
cons
- ❌ Limited global adoption – Zalo is essentially useless outside Vietnam. Unlike WhatsApp or Telegram which work worldwide, Zalo requires your contacts to also have the app. If you travel or have international friends, you'll still need another messaging app.
- ❌ No end-to-end encryption by default – Unlike Signal or WhatsApp, Zalo only encrypts messages in its “Secret Chat” mode. Regular chats are not end-to-end encrypted, which is a privacy concern if you value security over convenience.
- ❌ Minor UI lag on older phones – The app feels heavier than Telegram or Viber. On a four-year-old Android phone, I noticed delays when switching between tabs or loading the Timeline. It's not terrible, but noticeable compared to lighter alternatives.

Seedance 2.0 vs Sora: The Future of AI Video Generation
The AI video race has intensified dramatically over the past two years. Platforms like Sora from OpenAI and Luma Dream Machine pushed the boundaries of text-to-video realism. Yet, despite their impressive outputs, most tools still operate as probabilistic generators—you describe a scene, and the model interprets it. Control remains limited. With the February 2026 release of Seedance 2.0, developed by ByteDance, the paradigm shifted. Internally known as Jimeng 2.0, Seedance does not position itself as just another video model. It positions itself as an AI Director. Rather than guessing what you want, Seedance 2.0 allows you to direct what happens. This distinction defines everything that follows.
